Gold Coast based Kiwi, Scott McLaughlin enjoyed a successful first test behind the wheel of the Hyper PRO Racer at Winton Motor Raceway last Friday, completing more than thirty laps driving the exciting and unique Yamaha-powered machine in both dry and wet conditions.

Sixteen-year-old McLaughlin, winner of numerous sprint karting titles and New Zealand’s representative at last year’s Rotax World Junior Championship, thoroughly enjoyed himself and drove with great maturity and plenty of speed to finish the day just under 0.5s slower than regular test driver and designer / constructor, Dean Crooke.

The Hyper PRO Racer is a logical, affordable and attractive stepping stone for karters to move up to open-circuit racing and McLaughlin has joined the Hyper team as an official ‘factory’ driver. He will continue to test alongside Crooke and will create a perfect information conduit for karters looking to step up to the PRO Racer.

A delighted McLaughlin was all smiles at the end of the day, saying “It’s awesome to drive, nothing like a kart and you have to be quite precise with it and concentrate hard, as you’re really moving. It’s not hard to make the transition and the gearbox is brilliant. I think karters would quickly acclimatise to it, but finding real speed is very challenging and I had a few moments exploring the limits. My 130-km/h spin in the ‘Sweeper’ really captured my attention. It was very well balanced and did everything right when I drove it on wets later in the day ... I just wanted more.

Crooke was also impressed with the car and young Scott. “We’ve changed the gearing since we were here last and it’s certainly much closer now, maybe one more tooth to be perfect. We’re finding big chunks of time with every outing and the balance in both the dry and on wet tyres is excellent. I was thoroughly impressed with Scott, he acquitted himself really well. His speed for his first time in the car was staggering and his approach and feedback is just what we are looking for – we had a great day.”
