First Track Test for Hyper PRO Racer
Photos and Story by Jon Crooke
Haunted Hills
14 August 2009
Test day at Haunted Hills Hillclimb at Morwell.

DRIVERS
Test Driver - Dean Crooke
Drivers - Jon Crooke and Chris Jewell

CAR
Tested with temporary nose cone and radiator scoops. No other bodywork was fitted.
Tyre wear condition - medium.
Eastern Creek gearing - gears used - apart from starts, 2nd and 3rd.

TRACK
Track length 1400m - track used in continuous circuit format for most of the day with one standing start lap done at the end of the day for comparison purposes.
90 laps completed. With serious elevation changes, descending and climbing corners, blind crests and dips, the track is very demanding on chassis dynamics.
Track temperature - cold.

LAP TIMES
Conservative laps were driven in deference to the banks and tyre walls in close proximity to the track. The only standing start lap completed was travelled in 54 seconds, with an estimated second or so in hand for race day.
As a comparison see the track records below;
Formula Vee 58.47
Formula Ford 55.70
Porsche 996 Turbo 56.68
750cc Superkart 53.86

SUMMARY
The Pro Racer handled neutrally and predictably with the ability to easily steer the rear end with the throttle when required.
It was directionally very stable and very impressive on the bumpy crest and decent before turn 7.
Brakes were strong with plenty of feel.
Suspension was compliant and able to negotiate the raised curbs with easy. The ride was physically very easy on the driver.
The engine produces effortless controllable power, and lots of it.
Dean summed up the experience at the end of the day.
"The PRO Racer is a very serious race car with performance at this track up there with the top track weapons."

HYPER PRO RACER
ON-BOARD VIDEO

The video below is of 2 flying laps of the Bryant Park circuit.

These were early laps in the days test program and Dean was still learning the track and getting a feel for the car. It is interesting to note that Dean drove the entire first lap in 2nd gear to demonstrate the torque of the engine. Check out the run near the end of the lap from the hairpin (the slowest corner on the track) to the top of the hill all in 2nd gear !!

Dean commented that "The massive torque curve will make the Hyper PRO Racer a very forgiving race car in the hands of beginners and very relaxing for pros.

Having said that, the PRO Racer is a very serious race car with performance at this track up there with the top track weapons."

CHASSIS DYNAMICS ON-BOARD COMPARISON
HYPER PRO RACER vs SUPERKART
Standing Start Lap
Inevitable the Hyper PRO Racer will be compared to Superkarts by virtue of the fact that they are of similar size and weight, use the same wheel / tyre specification, run similar lap times and at $30,000 (Hyper) and $50,000 (SK), are both at the budget end of the sport.
The videos below are a graphic visual description of the difference between a superkart chassis, which is now basically a 40 year old design, and the state of the art Hyper PRO Racer chassis design.
You will note that the superkart, with its short wheel base, lacks directional stability. On this, the most demanding of tracks this side of the Nordschleife, the superkart driver has to constantly make steering corrections even in a straight line AND when encountering the bumps between turns 6 and 7, the superkart displays a brutal and complete loss of chassis control. This is a consequence of the ladder chassis design with no suspension. The superkart relies on chassis flex which is an uncontrollable undamped system.
By comparison the Hyper PRO Racer is completely stable AND is totally unaffected by the bumps between turns 6 and 7.
